LOCK SECURITY ALERT – PUBLIC SITES

Dear Safer Systems Customer

Safer Systems has identified a pattern of thefts which at present seems to centre on vending machines in  hospitals in England.

The Safer Systems lock is the most trusted lock within the Vending Industry and subsequently used on the majority of machines placed in public sites.  This lock is able to withstand an attack on the internal tumblers (from Lock Picks) for more than 10 minutes – offering a strong deterrant to lock picking.

Certain customers appear to have experienced attacks on their vending machines which, when CCTV is available, shows the same person is in the vicinity of the crime; where they are able to gain entry, is is taking 20-30 minutes to break in, offering a serious deterent to most criminals and clearly exceeding the industry standard requirement of just 10 minutes. Each Safer Systems customer that has seen the CCTV footage, states that the gang are of `Foreign Extraction’.

Unfortunately there is no photographic evidence, but they may have made a crude picking tool which, on some occasions, has the ability to open the vending machine.  I am pleased to say that, on the whole, locks are having the internal tumblers reconfigured rather than opened. This shows the lock is doing its job protecting against lock picking.  It does, however, meant that no keys can then operate the lock, requiring the lock to be drilled out.   There appears to be some discrepancy about the type of machine which is most susceptible to the lock being picked.

Our investigations have shown that machines which have a lock attached directly  to the internal locking bars, offer a greater resistance to unauthorised access, whereas a lock that protects a T-Handle is more likely to be overcome.

Safer Systems recommends following solution to this problem:

As each individual company knows, approaching the police with what they perceive as a minor commercial theft is not a priority; in fact we have had operators tell us the police are just not interested at all.  We recognise that theft from a vending machine on a public location is not something a vending operator may want to shout about, however, this may be an occasion where,  if we work together, we can stop this gang.   We propose that this can be done through the auspices of the AVA, with whom we have had preliminary talks.  They will guarantee commercial confidentiality and approach SOCA (the Serious Organised Crime Agency).  This is no longer one operator losing a few thousand pounds; it’s an industry being targeted and losing hundreds of thousands of pounds.

As stated, this team of thieves are targeting hospitals at present (and have been for the last three weeks).  Reports coming into Safer System do not show any slowing down in their target locations, however they may well go on to other public sites.

Rest assured Safer Systems can offer you an effective deterrent, making it harder and longer for them to gain access.  There is no such thing as a lock that cannot be picked, but I do think it would be best to take these people out of circulation, preferably by using the long arm of the law, and ensuring your machines are too difficult or time-consuming to hit.

Contact us at Safer Systems and we will pass your details on to the AVA, assuring you of absolute confidentiality.  Alternatively, contact Jonathan Hilder of the the AVA direct on jonathan@ava-vending.co.uk.  Jonathan will then collate all the information that the police may need and keep each individual company informed.

Safer Systems remains your vending security partner – let’s work together to lock out the criminals.

New Audit Key Makes Machines More Secure than Ever

Combine the RELIABILITY of a mechanical lock
With the EFFECTIVENESS of an audit key …

Stand A64 sees the launch of Safer Systems’ Audit Key.

How cool would it be to have a reliable vending machine locking system offering all the benefits and security of a mechanical lock with an electronic audit facility in the key, recording the date and time of entry to that machine and by whom.

Security, flexibility and accountability all at the fraction of the cost of an electronic locking system.

Visit Safer Systems, Stand A64 at Avex and see how we can help you effectively tackle theft and shrinkage.
