LOCK SECURITY ALERT – PUBLIC SITES

Dear Safer Systems Customer

Safer Systems has identified a pattern of thefts which at present seems to centre on vending machines in  hospitals in England.

The Safer Systems lock is the most trusted lock within the Vending Industry and subsequently used on the majority of machines placed in public sites.  This lock is able to withstand an attack on the internal tumblers (from Lock Picks) for more than 10 minutes – offering a strong deterrant to lock picking.

Certain customers appear to have experienced attacks on their vending machines which, when CCTV is available, shows the same person is in the vicinity of the crime; where they are able to gain entry, is is taking 20-30 minutes to break in, offering a serious deterent to most criminals and clearly exceeding the industry standard requirement of just 10 minutes. Each Safer Systems customer that has seen the CCTV footage, states that the gang are of `Foreign Extraction’.

Unfortunately there is no photographic evidence, but they may have made a crude picking tool which, on some occasions, has the ability to open the vending machine.  I am pleased to say that, on the whole, locks are having the internal tumblers reconfigured rather than opened. This shows the lock is doing its job protecting against lock picking.  It does, however, meant that no keys can then operate the lock, requiring the lock to be drilled out.   There appears to be some discrepancy about the type of machine which is most susceptible to the lock being picked.

Our investigations have shown that machines which have a lock attached directly  to the internal locking bars, offer a greater resistance to unauthorised access, whereas a lock that protects a T-Handle is more likely to be overcome.

Safer Systems recommends following solution to this problem:

As each individual company knows, approaching the police with what they perceive as a minor commercial theft is not a priority; in fact we have had operators tell us the police are just not interested at all.  We recognise that theft from a vending machine on a public location is not something a vending operator may want to shout about, however, this may be an occasion where,  if we work together, we can stop this gang.   We propose that this can be done through the auspices of the AVA, with whom we have had preliminary talks.  They will guarantee commercial confidentiality and approach SOCA (the Serious Organised Crime Agency).  This is no longer one operator losing a few thousand pounds; it’s an industry being targeted and losing hundreds of thousands of pounds.

As stated, this team of thieves are targeting hospitals at present (and have been for the last three weeks).  Reports coming into Safer System do not show any slowing down in their target locations, however they may well go on to other public sites.

Rest assured Safer Systems can offer you an effective deterrent, making it harder and longer for them to gain access.  There is no such thing as a lock that cannot be picked, but I do think it would be best to take these people out of circulation, preferably by using the long arm of the law, and ensuring your machines are too difficult or time-consuming to hit.

Contact us at Safer Systems and we will pass your details on to the AVA, assuring you of absolute confidentiality.  Alternatively, contact Jonathan Hilder of the the AVA direct on jonathan@ava-vending.co.uk.  Jonathan will then collate all the information that the police may need and keep each individual company informed.

Safer Systems remains your vending security partner – let’s work together to lock out the criminals.

ONLY TRUST THE EXPERTS WHEN IT COMES TO SECURITY

‘Beware of cheap imitations’ - that’s the message from Steven Bane, Managing Director of Safer Systems.  ‘There are numerous ‘security experts’ in the field who claim to understand vending security and who offer a range of products they say are effective against theft and vandalism.

Many of these companies claim to sell our products, even using our images and product descriptions, but  BEWARE they are not legitimate distributors of any of our products, be they our tamper-evident cash bag CUSTODIAN, our uniquely-coded locks & keys or our DEFEND-A-VEND vending cage.  All our products are designed and robustly tested by us, with you in mind.  And because we understand your business, we design award-winning products which precisely target vending crime and costly vandalism.

For instance:-

  • We only sell the number of keys you need to run your operation; too many keys weaken your security and those keys we despatch are  recorded in our Lock & Key Database and sent to authorised personnel on our Register.

  • The Vending Security Cage allows unrestricted access for both customers and engineers, whilst allowing machines to be sited in vulnerable sites, even outdoors, and remaining secure.

  • Our unique Custodian cash bag is quick and simple to install and remove and allows for discreet cash removal and easy transportation to your secure location.

Trust the experts – with Safer Systems you are in safe hands.  Together we’ll effectively tackle crime and keep our vending industry healthy.

For tailored, effective security, trust the experts.

Safer Systems Global Vending Specialist

Safer Systems Established as a Truly Global Vending Specialist

As world markets continue to struggle under global economic pressure, Safer Systems has seen its presence in the global market expand, with its products now sold on every continent of the world, from Asia to Antartica. Steven Bane, Managing Director, attributes such success to a number of key factors:  “At Safer Systems, we have always strived to be innovative – to anticipate market needs and pre-empt many of the challenges of vending theft; to understand the different needs and working practices of our customers accross the world.

“We have also listened to our customers, who want practical and simple solutions to vending theft, but at affordable prices.  That is why we continue to improve our designs and source reliable suppliers, without compromising on the quality of our products.  In 2010, this has meant we have been able to reduce the cost of our unique self-locking cash bag, Custodian, whilst also adding some new features to the bag.

“We understand that when money is tight the thought of investing in vending security often seems unnecessary; now, however, is the time to look at your vending security when cash businesses, such as vending, are under increased scrutiny from theives.  Who has keys to your machines and can access your cash without your knowledge?  Once inside, can they get free access to  your cash or is it protected by a locking bag or box?  These, and many more questions, need to be asked if a company is to ensure it is not losing its valuable profits to theives.”

Safer Systems is always glad to discuss your vending security options, from locking systems which suit both budget and operating systems, cash handling, anti-vandalism machine cages and much more.   Visitors to Vending Paris will have an opportunity to see for themselves how our range of products work, as we will be exhibiting the Custodian cash bag and a range of quality locking systems at the show.  For more details, please follow the link to the Vending Paris web site.

Safer Systems will be exhibiting at the following events :

  • Vending Paris 2010 - 27-19 October 2010, Paris
  • Avex 2011 – 15-16 June 2011 NEC Birmingham, England
  • EU Vend 2011 – 8-10 September 2011 Cologne

We hope to see you at one of the forthcoming exhibitions.
